A MEMORY; A STAR
The stars are so many light years away, and so years and years go by before their light meets our eyes. And just like the stars, a memory, too, can be distant. But such a fact does not diminish a memory’s validity, one bit. How amazing it is to think about how gazing at the stars is like taking a peek into the past! We are all time travelers-- we who marvel at the wonders of the universe. So too do you time travel when a memory crosses your mind.
The stars are real. And so are our memories, along with each and every feeling we’ve felt both during and after the memory was made.
We all have our own vast night sky inside of us, as each memory is a star in the vast and endless void. What does your night sky look like?
A MOTHER'S GOODBYES
I finally cradled you in my arms
swaddled in pastel pink
your tranquil face so far from harm
impossibly elated, I could hardly think.
Your jubilant grin was the sun in my clouds
your twinkling eyes yet to discover
an innocent smile betrayed by crowds
I held you as you recovered.
You skipped with your tiny backpack
Into a big and strange new land
I knew there was no turning back
no more holding mommy’s hand.
You screamed at me to leave
then locked your bedroom door
teardrops glistened at my cheeks
as I gazed down at the floor.
I held you close by my side
engulfed you with my love
hushed and hugged you as you cried
as sister watched from above.
Absent from our home each day,
you’ve got a boyfriend now
“Darling, please be safe,” I prayed
“Come back to me, somehow.”
We packed your bags and set your dorm
your roommate yet to come
our tear stained cheeks just as a storm
as your father sadly hummed.
A young man was at our house,
gracious, charming, polite,
sought a blessing for his future spouse
your own smile ever bright.
In nine short months, your final wave,
our tiny infant erased.
Your brilliant white dress a flowing cascade
with your beautiful tranquil face.
Papa may be crying
as he hands you to your groom
but our love for you remains undying
Here in this silver room.

Nikki Liv is an upcoming (bubble-loving) second year at the University of California, Irvine. At times, she feels as if she is an anachronism, feeling the need to time travel by immersing herself in Shakespeare’s poems and binge watching period dramas. Still, she knows she is right where she should be when she stargazes at 2AM, visits art museums and coffee shops, goes on adventures with her friends & family, watches musicals, sings for mass at Saint Patrick in Rodeo, and annoys her dog, Gigi. Hi, Gigi.
